Some people think that an arrest defines a person. Regardless of whether that individual is convicted, others are quick to believe that the person is a horrible criminal who is guilty of everything. It sounds extreme, but it's an accurate reflection of the beliefs of some people in St. Paul.

After a second-grade teacher, David, was arrested on charges of child pornography and sexually assaulting a child, members of the community were quick to condemn him. One woman said that before his arrest, his clean-cut face matched his personality. Another woman said it was scary because "he's the kind of person you're attracted to, the kind of person you trust."

He hasn't been convicted, yet the community seems to believe that his arrest negates any positive thing he's done.

What may be even sadder is that much of the evidence against the man accuses him of committing sex crimes about three years ago. Is it possible that the teacher struggled with child pornography several years ago but worked to overcome an addiction?

The police reported that the teacher logged into an online child pornography forum more than 20 times in 2010. There is no information about any activity more recently. In addition, there was no information regarding the timing of those logins. The teacher may have struggled for a few months but then worked to distance himself from the porn. At this point, it's impossible to know, but the lack of recent viewings supports the claim.

The man is also facing charges for sexually abusing a child. During the search, police found a homemade video of a partially naked 12-year-old girl. Part of a man can be seen posing the girl in sexual stances, and David admitted that he is the man in the video. Like the online porn viewings, the video was made about three years old, and there was no evidence of more recent videos.

Did David struggled with a child pornography addiction but overcome it on his own? Read more in our next learn the other details of the case. The teacher is facing scrutiny for behavior that -- although unusual -- is legal.
